Start the Day with a Smoothie! Balsam of Peru Avoidance Diet

A Balsam of Peru allergy can be minimized for some with a strict avoidance diet. While not all individuals with a BoP allergy will need such a strict regimen, many are finally able to live reaction-free once they begin to avoid foods containing the constituents of BoP.

When I was diagnosed with Balsam of Peru allergy, I began a strict avoidance of all foods and products found on the avoid lists here. I stuck true to this diet for about 8 months before I slowly began to reintroduce some food items. There were definitely times when eating became a huge challenge. With four children and a husband to cook for, making my avoidance diet a priority was hard. I learned to whip up a few things like a quick stove-top stir fry or an omelet and I carried nuts with me as I’m not allergic to those, but one of my go-to’s became a quick protein smoothie.

Low Allergen Products

Guide to Low Allergen Home, Personal Care, and Beauty Products

Low Allergen Products are your best defense in preventing sensitization of the skin. Clearing out your home and personal care products can be a challenge. I’ve pulled together a list of what I’m currently using and found it safe. (note, I am not allergic to Methylisothiazolinone, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, or Nickel which are common allergens).

I keep all fragrances, botanical oils, formaldehyde (and its releases), and Gold out of my products. I do link as many of these products as I can to Amazon for your convenience. Some low allergen products you can find in Target and Walgreens – places I frequent. These are the products I personally use daily.

Laundry! Lots and Lots of Laundry!

I get questions all the time about my laundry. What’s best? What cleans best? You really don’t use fabric softener??? I get it. Most have been doing their laundry with the same detergents their parents used! Changing this seems daunting and confusing. When I was first diagnosed with allergic contact dermatitis in 2006, I swore off laundry and had my husband do it for about 6 months. We only had two children at the time so it was a lot easier to keep up with then for him. Folding laundry had always caused my hands to itch, but I really didn’t understand why. We switched to a sensitive-skin fabric softener and an allergy-friendly (or so we thought) liquid detergent. Fast forward to my big reaction of 2018 and subsequently I learned a lot more about my allergies and how to live a reaction-free life. These discoveries have been life-changing for me and for my family. It’s what inspired me to write this blog to help others on their path to living reaction-free.

My Favorite Allergen-Free Shampoo

I have searched long and hard (and had many missteps!) for an allergy free shampoo that is free of my contact dermatitis allergies. While not tons of options to choose from, there are several. But many of them are probably great for short hair or hair of other textures, but my hair is VERY fine, long, and has a lot of natural curly (read frizzy) tendencies.
